FAQ

FAQ

What is Judo, and is it safe?
Judo is a safe and structured martial art that focuses on throws, holds, and submissions. Our instructors emphasize safety and teach proper falling techniques (ukemi) to minimize injury risks.
Yes! We offer classes for kids aged 8-13. Judo helps children improve their physical coordination, self-discipline, and respect for others, all while having fun and staying active.

Not at all! We have people of all ages in our classes, including seniors (14 and up). Judo is adaptable to all fitness levels, and you can progress at a pace that suits you.
No, Judo is for everyone, regardless of your current fitness level. You’ll build strength, flexibility, and endurance over time as you practice.
Judo improves your fitness, self-confidence, and discipline. It’s also a great way to meet new people and become part of a welcoming community.
No, competition is optional. We occasionally hold friendly tournaments and icebreaker events, but there’s no pressure to participate unless you want to.
Judo uses a colored belt system to signify progression. Beginners start with a white belt. As you learn and demonstrate new techniques, you’ll be promoted to higher belts, such as yellow, orange, green, blue, and brown. Eventually, with years of dedicated training, you can achieve a black belt.
Belt promotions are based on your skill development, understanding of techniques, and participation in classes. Regular attendance, consistent practice, and demonstrating your abilities during class or testing sessions will help you advance.
Classes start with warm-ups, followed by instruction on techniques, then practice with partners. Our classes are structured to be educational, fun, and supportive for all skill levels.
You’ll need a Judo Gi (uniform) to train. (Placeholder for Gi cost and information on how to obtain one when you register)
While both Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu share similar roots, the focus of each martial art is different. Judo emphasizes throws and takedowns, with the goal of bringing your opponent to the ground. However, once on the ground, Judo also incorporates ground techniques (newaza), including pins, joint locks, and chokes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, on the other hand, places a greater focus on ground fighting and submissions, with less emphasis on throws. Both arts are complementary, but Judo tends to start standing while Jiu-Jitsu often prioritizes ground control.

The Kamloops Judo Club was founded in 1956 by members of the Kamloops Japanese community, with support from the Buddhist Church. Early black belt instructors Yosh Yoshida, Kaz Yokoyama, and Frank Maeda were instrumental in establishing the club, with Henry Uyeda joining shortly after.

The club initially practiced in the basement of the Kamloops Buddhist Church before moving to various locations around the city, often in challenging conditions. By the 1970s, the club sought a permanent home, leading to the construction of a dedicated Dojo on school district property. The Kamloops Judo Society was incorporated in 1973 to oversee the project, and the Dojo officially opened in May 1975, built largely by volunteers.

The “Koenkai” (parents group), formed in 1957, played a crucial role in the club’s success, fundraising for the Dojo and supporting its operations for decades. Today, the Kamloops Dojo remains one of the top Judo facilities in B.C., providing high-quality instruction in a welcoming environment.
